Other High-End Gear:
*Back in 1983 when I installed my C-band (high-end 10-foot solid fiberglass Satellite Dish) system, I had full access everything on C-band including PPV programming. In 1990, I upgraded to my current Integrated Receiver Descrambler (IRD), which is a Chaparral Monterey 90 (factory updated Monterey 95 specifications in 1995), 30-degree California Amplifier LNB, and new Saginaw commercial actuator. It is a shame that the subscription rates for programming the satellite service providers demand does not reflect the fact that satellite dish owner’s purchase, maintain, and upgrade their own equipment at the owner’s expense (my last C-band upgrade was $1,600.00 at wholesale cost in 1995 dollars). Ironic how I was one of the original Cable TV installers when cable TV came first to our town in 1978 and back in 1983 when my free cable TV came to an end, due to the lousy picture quality, limited channel selection, and un-reasonably high cable TV rates, I refused to subscribe to cable TV and opted to install my own C-band Satellite TV system. 20 years later, I find myself paying $100.00/month for the same old crap (once cable modem service came to town in January 2003), largely because I want HDTV and the High-Speed broadband internet service which is only available here via cable modem, and still find myself watching over-the-air TV broadcasts fed from the old Radio Shack roof-top VHF/UHF/FM antenna I installed in 1983, because the picture quality is so much better than cable TV. Too bad the satellite service providers (especially C-band and Ku-band) do not offer pricing that is reasonable relative to their cost to provide the service to system owners with no overhead. Please contact me if you or someone you know and trust “play around” with satellite TV systems, as I am interested in learning more. I have also played around with DirecTV and Dish Network DSS satellite TV systems, but have fallen out of the loop recently and would like to get up to speed with what is going on there too. I am pretty handy with a soldering iron and operating PCs and software.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Well….even though my existing sound system which according to Audiophiles over the last 50 years has only been exceeded by live concert sound and thus leaving little room for improvement, in order to rock it properly, I am going to add another pair (or more) of Klipsch Klipschorn (corner-horn) speakers, a few McIntosh tube amplifiers, and a new 120” wide-screen high-definition TV to the main home theater.
